Get started with monitoring

Introduction

Monitoring automates the process of checking the availability of a service, such as a website or application. Uptime monitoring detects and alerts the appropriate person on the development team when a service experiences downtime or an outage.

Creating your first monitor

To initiate monitoring, we will establish a monitor based on an HTTP status code and configure basic alerting in the event of an incident.

The HTTP status code monitor periodically checks your URLs to ensure they return a successful HTTP status code (2XX). If the URL fails to return this code, the monitor generates an Incident and notifies the person currently on-call. If there is no response from the on-call person, the entire team is alerted.

Step 1: Selecting the URL to monitor

  • Navigate to MonitorsCreate monitor.
  • Enter the URL or IP address you wish to monitor in the designated text field.

Step 2: Choosing alerting options

  • Now that we have determined what the monitor will assess, we must specify the actions to take when the check fails. The available alerting options include:
    • Phone call: This option is ideal for vital business pages that require 24/7 availability. Phone calls are fully automated.
    • SMS: Recommended for less critical alerts, such as low-traffic blog pages, or in combination with other alerting methods.
    • E-mail: Similar to SMS alerts, suitable for less critical monitoring or in conjunction with other approaches.

    TIP

We suggest whitelisting the @cronping.com domain in your email client to ensure incident alerts are marked as important and avoid diversion to folders other than the main inbox.

    • Slack, Microsoft Teams, and other alerting integrations: These options are highly adaptable for all types of alerts and can seamlessly integrate with your internal setup. Discover all available alerting integrations by visiting the "Integrations" section.

Step 3: Choosing escalation options

  • If multiple users or teams utilize Uptime, you may want to explore the on-call scheduling and alerting section. This section provides insights into on-call procedures and instructions for configuring escalation policies to suit your team's requirements.
  • For single-user teams, the default option suffices.

Note

This feature is under development and will be available soon.

Step 4: Creating a monitor

  • With the basic setup complete, click on "Create monitor."
  • The monitor is now operational and will continuously check the specified URL.
